Gear Changes

In a manual transmission car, the driver has to choose when to make a gear change. The timing of these changes in gear directly affect the acceleration and fuel consumption of your car.

When it comes to fast acceleration it is difficult to say when the best time to shift gears is because different cars have different gearboxes and max RPM's. Genrally, the lower the rpms at a gear change gives slower acceleration but better fuel economy. The higher the rpm's at a gear change will give you better acceleration but at the cost of more fuel consumption.

Experiment CAREFULLY to find out where on the RPM range your car starts to "pull" more and try to shift so that for example when going from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, 3rd lands in the position with the most "pull"

Do not over rev your engine or RED LINE your RPM counter as this can damage your engine if done for too long or too often.
Do this at your own risk. I will not take any responsibility for damage done to your car, yourself, others or other cars or property.
