An air filter in your car stops any unwanted dust, dirt and water particles from entering your engine and causing damage. Stock air filters are generally made of paper which is folded many times to create a bigger surface area to let air through.
This paper gets dirty and blocked over time and can starve your engine of the oxygen it needs to operate. It's like trying to run while breathing through a straw. Even small cars need large amounts of air when the engine is running.
New air filters are quite cheap. Mine cost me £6 from halfords. That was before i bought a K&N air filter.
K&N Air filters are made of cotton and metal mesh coated in special oil to trap more dirt and allow more air to flow freely into the engine. you simply open your air box, remove your old filter by hand, put the new one in and close the air box. Thats it.
I got mine from Ebay for £35 and i've never looked back. My car has better acceleration and is way more responsive when i put my foot down and because you put it in your existing air box, it doesnt make your car any louder or like a "boy racer".
Do this at your own risk. I will not take any responsibility for damage done to your car, yourself, others or other cars or property.
